Welcome to the temporary website for Cricket Umpires & Scorers
in Wales. The
region covers the whole of Wales
except Clwyd and Gwynedd, and was up until 1st January 2008 one of 12 UK regions within
the Association of Cricket Umpires & Scorers.
The main objective of is to improve the standard of umpiring and
scoring and the status of the umpires and scorers via a system of training
courses and examinations which are organised by branches throughout the
area.
Within the Wales Region there are six branches spread
across the South Wales area and training courses are arranged in each
during the winter months. If you have recently given up playing and
feel you owe the great game something then why not take up a course in
umpiring or scoring and help your club and or league by putting something
back into the game.
Members
range from those who umpire in Test matches to those who umpire on the
village green. One member from the Wales region who has progressed onto
the first class list is Jeff
Evans who, after completing his playing career, began umpiring in the
South Wales Cricket Association. He then made it onto the Minor
Counties list and eventually onto the first class list. Jeff was one
of the umpires who stood in the inaugural indoor cricket matches held in the
Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in 2002.
Other
first class umpires who have lived and played in Wales include former
Glamorgan players
David
G L Evans,
Kevin
J Lyons,
John
F Steele and
Alan A.
Jones. Another former first class umpire who now lives in Wales
is
Derek Dennis who has contributed much to the Wales Region since his
move back from the London area. He did try to move back to Surrey a few
years ago but could not settle and moved back to the Swansea area again.
David
Evans also made it onto the test circuit by umpiring in 13 one day
internationals and 9 test matches, before his unexpected death on March
26th 1990, aged 56. Many other umpires, too many to mention, have
made it onto the minor counties list, but with the opportunity to progress
further very limited they have been unable to make the final step.
The Association of Cricket Umpires & Scorers ceased to
exist when a new organisation The ECB Association of Cricket Officials
was formed and we wait to see what the set up will be within the new
organisation for Umpires & Scorers in Wales.
Prior to the setting up of the ECB Association of Cricket Officials
in England & Wales, all new recruits to the First
Class Umpires List required ACU&S qualifications, and Qualified
Membership was mandatory for appointment to the ECB’s cup competitions
and many senior leagues. The examination process will now become the
duty of the new association.
Watch this space for more information as it becomes available.
At the last regional meeting held at Llandarcy in October two members
were presented with plaques to mark their outstanding service to the Wales
Region of ACU & S. This was prior to members decision to disband the
Association.

Arwyn Williams, who served as Secretary for 10 years receives ACU&S plaque
from Dave Carter, Regional Councillor

John D. Williams, who served as Secretary and Deputy Regional Councillor
receives ACU&S plaque from Dave Carter, Regional Councillor.
John also
served the ACU&S whilst living in Guernsey.
